Opening party for ‘Generations’ at Maine Art Gallery
In honor of its 65th anniversary, the opening party for the Maine Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition, “Generations,” will be a special event. All are invited to join the festivities on Saturday, May 6 from 4 - 7 p.m. Maine art writer and guest curator Carl Little will offer brief remarks to introduce the show. The celebration, with music by jazz guitarist David Lawlor, will include wine and light appetizers.
The “Generations” exhibition has three parts: work by select artists from the gallery’s early years, an invitational of contemporary artists, and a juried show of current members. “The exhibition represents the evolving, intergenerational, and vital Maine art scene,” says Little.
During the course of the show, several artists talks will expand upon the art and artists on display. On Thursday, May 18 Maine State Historian Earle Shettleworth and art restorer Peter Fogg will discuss their personal memories of gallery founder Mildred Burrage at 5 p.m. On Wednesday, May 24 at 4 p.m. artist and writer Robert Beck will talk about painting the working maritime community and practical matters of making a living as an artist. In the final talk of this series on Thursday, June 1 at 5 p.m. David Etnier, son of Steven Etnier, one of the Maine Art Gallery’s founding artists, will share his experiences photographing many of Maine’s most accomplished artists. Twenty-one of his black-and-white portraits are featured in the show.
The Maine Art Gallery acknowledges with thanks exhibit sponsor Dow Furniture and season sponsor Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty.
