Meet Our Writers: Isabelle Curtis
I have been a news contributor since summer 2021 when I got the opportunity to complete my college journalism internship right at the Boothbay Register! Last summer, I graduated summa cum laude from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in journalism and am currently a nonfiction MFA candidate. My journalistic work has received several awards, including recognition from the New England, New Hampshire, and Maine Press Associations.
Despite being a Boothbay Harbor native, my time at the Register has immersed me in the community in an entirely new way. I’ve been able to meet and profile some amazing people, but one of my most memorable experiences was during my internship when I hopped on the mail boat to visit former writer of the Register’s Squirrel Island column Libby Lovat at her family’s summer home. Lovat, then 93, was celebrating 60 years since her first cancer diagnosis. I may have gotten lost several times trying to find her house but hearing her story was worth it.
I also enjoy covering issues that are affecting our community in both the summer and winter months. An unexpected favorite was last year’s deep dive into the reason for the lack of redemption centers in the region. Who knew recyclables could be so interesting? As a member of a lobster fishing family, my article on the region’s response to climate change is also high on my list.
When I’m not writing for the Register, I’m writing for myself! My personal work ranges from short fictional flash pieces to pop culture critique. But I always look forward to returning to the Boothbay Register and spending another summer with my lovely editors and colleagues who’ve been a massive help over the years.
