Read & Watch movie event tells the ‘Hole’ story
Join us for our first ever Family Read & Watch on the Library lawn on Friday, Aug. 4 starting at 6:30 p.m. We’ll be discussing the Newberry Award Winning book “Holes” by Louis Sachar and watching the movie adaptation of the classic kids’ novel.
Holes was both a critical and commercial success when it was released in 1998. This award-winning, modern classic reminds readers that adventure is right around the corner – or just under your feet! Major themes include the consequence of choices resulting from fate and destiny and the importance of friendship. Sachar never sets out to teach a specific moral or lesson when he writes. Instead, he creates characters that his readers can empathize with and involves them in plots that are fun to read. Holes won the 1998 US National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the 1999 Newbery Medal for the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." In 2012 it was ranked number six among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal. It is also one of Time Magazine’s 100 best YA books of all time.
The book was adapted as a feature film of the same name in 2003. The film received generally positive reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 78% rating and said “Holes is a terrific live action movie from Disney and it is a very entertaining film from start to finish. Faithful to its literary source, this is imaginative, intelligent family entertainment.”
*Registration is required for the discussion and pizza dinner. Pizza for the event is generously donated by the Boothbay House of Pizza. Bring your own blankets and lawn chairs. We’ll provide the popcorn - courtesy of our friends at the Harbor Theater.
“Between the tightly fitted plot and the signifying wordplay, ''Holes'' is a smart jigsaw puzzle of a novel that middle-grade youngsters will want to solve on their own.” - The New York Times.
