CTL hosts first interns of the 2023-24 school year
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), a K-8 independent school in Edgecomb, hosted a group of teaching interns from SUNY Buffalo State University last week. For 30 years, educators have visited Edgecomb for a week at a time to observe methods developed by CTL’s faculty and adapt them to their own classrooms and schools.
Professor Keli Garas-York led a team of undergrad and graduate students to CTL to learn more about the school's teaching model. Sydney Mueller, Danielle Myers, Claire Miller, Emma Grimm, and Eve Doherty observed classes and discussed their observations with school faculty each day. They examined student writing and learned about CTL's approach to assessment.
The Cod Cove Inn generously subsidized the interns' and professor's rooms, making it possible for several first-generation college students to attend the week-long training.
Since 1990 CTL has lived its mission as a demonstration school, collaborating rather than competing with other teachers and schools. Teachers from 45 states, Washington D.C.; and Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, England, India, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Uganda have participated so far in CTL's intern program. Educators may apply to become interns at CTL; the fee they pay helps underwrite tuition assistance for CTL students.
