WES ecology club blends fun, learning, service
Several Wiscasset Elementary School fourth and fifth grade students are taking part in year two of an ecology club. These students gather each Monday afternoon to accomplish three goals: Play in nature, learn about the ecology of our area, and help the school with service projects. The students created a mission statement to respect the world, be mindful of consumption and waste, to inform others how to respect the environment and, most importantly, to have fun.
The students recently had fun playing in the riverfront learning space. They worked together to rake leaves into a giant pile for jumping. Once each member had their jump, they went on a search for seeds. The club spread the seeds out and discussed the abiotic and biotic factors that seeds would need to grow into plants. Once the seed lesson was completed, the students each went to a room in the school to collect the paper recycling. They are excited to continue their service project and wish to start collecting data by weighing the amount of paper they save from the trash each week. Stay tuned for more exciting updates about the ecology club.
