A presidential candidate challenge
Let the political food fight begin.
Last week, the Supreme Court said the 14th Amendment didn’t bar the former president from running for another term. That is good news.
The Supremes for all their majesty, pomp, circumstance, and somber black robes have no business electing a president. That is up to the people to make that choice.
Last week, the former president’s final GOP challenger threw in the towel and left the field. And the Democrats had no real opponents. So, it looks like the 2024 general election is off and running.
Just for the record, on last week's Super Tuesday primary election, our hometown GOP voters in Wiscasset, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, and Southport favored Donald Trump over Nikki Haley by 694 to 385. Democrats gave Joe Biden 626 votes.
Now that the primary season has sputtered to a halt, we can assume the 2024 general election will be a rematch of 2020, where Maine voters favored Biden 53% to 44%.
But that was history. Today, we face a presidential race that is expected to feature more ruts than our shore roads suffered during the recent winter storms.
In addition, the former president faces not only the usual political gunk, he faces a series of court appearances left over from the 2020 election fiasco. My crystal ball has no clue how they will affect the race.
The current president faces a GOP-controlled House of Representatives in disarray, other than a near-united desire to oppose anything he favors. Oh yes, there is the matter of the southern border, wars in Ukraine and Israel, and pirates in the Red Sea. Grocery prices are still high, but your 401K, if you have one, is doing pretty well.
In case you live under a woodland bush, Father Time is stalking both candidates. Biden is 81. Trump is 77. Both may be nearing their sell-by date, as the latest estimated life span for American males in 2023 is 73.2 years.
In many ways, the 2024 race pits Grandpa vs. Grandpa.
By the way, if you watched the State of the Union speech on Thursday, there were a lot of white/grey-haired grandpas and grandmas sitting in the congressional seats.
As the campaign plays out until the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, there may be lots of political bombshells. Most TV “experts” predict it will be a nasty and muddy campaign.
But, as I watched the State of the Union spectacle, I wondered how my grandkids would compare Grandpa Joe to Grandpa Donald.
For a moment, pretend you are a kid. If your mom said she and dad were going to go out of town, and you were going to live with one of your grandpas for the weekend, which would you choose?
Grandpa Donald lives in a posh Florida country club where he is waited upon by servants. You could probably eat whatever you want and avoid spinach if that is your wish. But at times, this grandpa can be a bit grumpy, tends to talk a lot about himself, and puts down anyone who dares to oppose him. He also tends to stick his friends and enemies with goofy nicknames. I am told this grandpa snacks on burgers and fries.
Grandpa Joe lives in the White House, where servants take care of his needs. They say the food is pretty good, although the first lady looks like a woman who would insist that you eat your spinach and a bunch of other healthy stuff. But this grandpa likes ice cream, smiles a lot, and seems to be a regular guy. Best of all, Grandpa Joe evicted the German shepherd after he chewed on the Secret Service agents.
Both grandpas are very busy. Both are surrounded by flunkies and often fly around the world to hobnob with big shots. You might not get to (or have to) spend much one-on-one time with either grandpa.
Both men claim to be pretty religious, but I’ll bet Grandpa Joe and the First Lady would insist you go to Sunday mass with them.
In both cases, you might meet some interesting people protesting outside the homes of both grandpas, but security guards would protect you and keep you out of trouble.
In either case, you are not likely to find a lot of other kids to play with, but still the weekend might be interesting.
So, tell me, if you were a kid, would you rather spend the weekend with Grandpa Donald or Grandpa Joe?
Let me know – and please don’t just copy and paste some political boilerplate/gobbledygook from a left or right-wing website.
And, for Pete’s sake, keep your answer short. Think about it for a moment. I’d love to hear from you.
And, as always, thanks for reading newspapers – especially this one.
