James H. Whiting
Jim, a beloved husband, father, papa, Army Special Forces Vietnam Veteran, law enforcement officer, Mason, Shriner and member of the Scottish Rite, passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2024 just weeks after celebrating his 80th birthday. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, courage, and service that will be forever cherished by his family, friends, and community.
Born in Bangor, Maine, Jim spent his formative years in Goshen, Connecticut, alongside his loving parents and brother, “Bart.” He attended Wamogo Regional High School, where he made lasting friendships. Following his graduation Jim pursued higher education at Parsons College in Iowa, where he continued to demonstrate his intellect and passion for learning.
During a pivotal moment in history, Jim answered the call of duty as a member of the Army Special Forces and bravely served his country during the Vietnam War for two tours after being drafted. His commitment to his fellow soldiers and the principles he upheld during his military service will always be remembered and honored.
After his military service Jim continued to serve his community as a law enforcement officer for the town of Torrington, Connecticut for over 28 years, where he exemplified integrity, compassion, and selflessness in protecting and serving others within the community. His commitment to justice and his willingness to sacrifice for the safety of others will be remembered by all who knew him. Jim will always be known for his generosity and his connection with the communities youth, often referring to those who he befriended or helped as a ‘Partner.’
In addition to his military and law enforcement careers, Jim was deeply involved in various fraternal organizations, including the Masons and the Shriners. Jim attained the highest degree 32nd Mason and dedicated himself to the principles of brotherhood and services as a Shriner. His commitment to their organizations enriched the lives of many and leaves a legacy of compassion and comradery.
Above all else, Jim was a devoted husband, father, and papa. He found his greatest joy in the love and laughter of his two granddaughters, and his presence brought warmth and light to their lives. In Jim’s later years, he found joy in simple pleasures, spending unforgettable moments camping alongside his loving wife and cat (Isabel), casting lines into the water with his son and son-in law, enjoying his daughter-in law’s delicious creations, and sharing heartfelt visits with his daughter at the VA. His love knew no bounds, and his memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to those he leaves behind.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife Velma K. Whiting of Boothbay Harbor; his son and daughter-in-law James N. Whiting, Alicia Heisler; his daughter and son-in-law Vanessa F. Knipping and Dr. Richard W. Knipping III; grandchildren, Camille J. Knipping and Klara M. Knipping; his sister-in-law Joyce M. Whiting; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Jim was preceded in death by his father Charles B. Whiting Sr., his mother Katherine E. Whiting, and brother Charles B. Whiting Jr.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life and military honor will be held on June 27, 2024 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, Maine.
Though he may be gone from our sight, Jim's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy of service to this country and love will endure for generations to come.
