Wiscasset’s St. Philip’s Episcopal Church ‘punching far above its weight’
St. Philip’s Church in Wiscasset walks the walk and takes care of its people. In fact, the church with the red doors has practiced what it preached for as long as people can remember. In FY 2024 alone, the church provided groceries to feed 6,661 people. For a church of only 48 members with a small cadre of volunteers, that’s remarkable. But today, St. Philip’s needs people to help take care of the 200-year-old historic church building. We need to raise at least $125,000 just to shore up a foundation wall and remediate a moisture problem in the basement. And we need to paint two sides of the church that haven’t seen paint in over 60 years. The church that helped everyone who ever came through its red doors, now needs your help to keep those doors open while fulfilling our mission.
St. Philip’s is small in size but well known for its impact. Several church members along with another 35-40 community volunteers provide food for over 55 households from Midcoast Maine every week. And that’s not all. The St. Philip’s Bargain Basement provides everything from school clothing and winter coats to beds, chairs, and household necessities— at either low cost or no cost to individuals and families in difficult times.
There’s more. St. Philip’s is also a weekly meeting place for the largest AA community in Lincoln County. And the only way we can do this is through grants and private donations to keep the lights on and the parish hall warm. Since the pandemic, the flow of operating capital has dwindled, endowment funds have been tapped, and now the church needs another $125,000 to restore our capital reserve.
