Robert J. Walter
Robert Joseph Walter was born June 7, 1937, in Newark, New Jersey, the only child of Joseph and Catharine Walter (née Blake).
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Walter (née Faulkner), his two daughters and their husbands (Wendy and Gerald Galgan, and Gretchen and Edward Heffernan), and two grandchildren.
Bob attended schools in Newark and South Orange, New Jersey and graduated from Maple Wood High School in 1955. He then attended University of Maine at Orono, majoring in Forestry, and married Gloria the day before they graduated from UMO in 1959.
Bob and Gloria moved to Prairie City, Oregon and Bob went to work in the Malheur National Forest as a Timber Management Assistant. He went on to become the youngest Timber Management Supervisor in the district. While the couple was in Oregon, their daughter Wendy was born.
After a while, Bob discovered that most of what he was doing was teaching the younger members of the Forest Service. He decided that teaching was what he wanted to do, so the family returned to Maine. They lived in Bangor while Bob earned his BS in Education from UMO. During this time, their daughter Gretchen was born.
The family then moved to Oakfield, Maine, where Bob taught numerous subjects and coached baseball and basketball at Oakfield High School.
Bob then taught at Milo High School and, again, taught numerous subjects; he also coached baseball and cross country.
After Bob earned his Master’s Degree in Education from UMO in 1964, the family moved to Boothbay Harbor and Bob began teaching at Boothbay Region High School, where he taught physics and chemistry, and coached football and baseball. He was very proud of starting the high school chorus, which was open to all students.
While he was teaching at BRHS, Bob founded Friar Tuck Enterprises, a lawncare and property management company. When he retired from teaching, he ran the company full time.
Bob was a long-time member of the Rotary Club, a past president of the Club, and a member of many Rotary Committees. He was also a long-time member of the NEA and MTA, and served as president of the local MTA chapter. A member of the Italian Heritage Club in Portland, he enjoyed attending their meetings and pasta dinners.
Bob passed away at the Zimmerli Pavilion on Oct. 22, 2024. He expressed deep gratitude for everyone who cared for him in his last years.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a reception on Thursday, Oct. 31 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.
