Upcoming Adult Ed classes: Boating, navigation and more
Now that spring is finally here and the weather is getting warmer, soon it will be boating season. Boothbay Region Adult & Community Education is offering two U.S. Coast Guard Auxilary boating courses.
Navigating Mid-Coast Maine is an introduction to navigation using a chart of the Boothbay area. This four session course meets on April 29, May 1, 6, and 8, 6 to 8 p.m. The fee is $75. We will cover the basics about the information found on nautical charts as well as true and magnetic headings, lines of position, symbols and dead reckoning. You will become familiar with coastal waters between Small Point and Pemaquid. A Three Rivers chart (#13293), and a chapter on navigation principles included. A parallel ruler and dividers are needed and can be purchased separately.
About Boating Safely is an introduction to boating. This is also a four session course on May 13, 15, 20, and 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. The fee is $70. Topics covered will include types of boats, trailering, required safety equipment, navigating waterways, legal requirements, safe operation, emergencies and water sports. This course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Successful completion of an optional exam at the end of the class leads to a certificate to show you have taken a boating course. This certificate is required to operate a boat in most states and Canada. Many insurance companies offer discounts on insurance if you have a certificate.
Just a reminder about a few other upcoming classes. Learn to see differently and become more creative with your digital camera in Taking Great Photos with Leisha MacDougall on April 14 and 16, 6-8 p.m. In Tips to Control Clutter on April 17, 5:30-7 p.m., Harriet Vaughan from Legacy Years will explain how organizing or downsizing becomes a manageable chore when you have a plan.
