Alna motorcycle crash results in ‘life-threatening’ injury
A Belgrade man received a life-threatening head injury on June 8 when the motorcycle he was riding on Alna’s Route 218 collided head-on with another vehicle, authorities said.
Carl Cooke, 55, of Belgrade has been upgraded to ‘good condition’ as of June 10, a spokesman for the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston said. On June 9, Cooke had been in ‘fair condition.’
Cooke was northbound on a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, approaching the West Alna Road intersection, when the motorcycle entered a right curve and collided head-on with a 2010 Ford Transit delivery-type vehicle driven by Steven Frey, 59, of Newcastle, according to a June 9 Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office press release. When the motorcycle had entered the curve, it crossed into the southbound lane and into the path of the vehicle Frey was driving, the release states.
“Mr. Frey steered right in an attempt to avoid a collision and both (vehicles) collided head-on within the southbound travel lane,” the release continues.
Cooke, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and received a serious head injury; a LifeFlight helicopter took him to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, the release states.
Cooke was listed in good condition at CMMC on Tuesday afternoon, a hospital spokesman said.
Frey and a passenger in the vehicle he was driving were taken by Wiscasset Ambulance Service to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta for treatment of minor injuries.
The crash was being reconstructed and remained under investigation, Monday’s release states.
Wiscasset, Alna and Whitefield firefighters also responded to the scene of Sunday’s crash.
