Teen Institute offers hands-on opportunities for youth interested in conservation
The Damariscotta River Association (DRA) has announced that registration is on-going for Teen Institute for the Environment. This program is open to youth ages 12 to 17. This session is very specifically geared for teens and pre-teens. The entire week is focused on “doing science” in a meaningful way that contributes data and information to on-going projects as well as developing personal naturalist skills such as journaling. The group will be engaged in a wide variety of activities including: tagging Monarch butterflies for a citizen science project, doing field work with an entomologist, visiting Audubon’s Hog Island, and learning outdoor cooking skills.
DRA Education Coordinator Sarah Gladu added, “One of the great things about this session is that we invite a number of natural resource professionals including an entomologist and an ornithologist to talk about their work and their day-to-day activities. This gives the program participants a real feel for what it would be like to go into a natural resource profession and opens up possible career directions for them.”
This year the program is being held July 28 to August 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DRA Great Salt Bay Farm in Damariscotta. The fee is $220 for non-members and $195 for DRA members. For more information or to register contact DRA.
