Charles B. "Charlie" Hull Jr., 97, of Boothbay died at his home on Nov. 7, 2014.

Charlie was born in Massachusetts on July 30, 1917 and was the son of the late Mildred Lawton and Charles B. Hull, Sr. He attended and graduated from Massachusetts Public Schools.

At a young age, Charlie loved boats and wooden boat building, having built his first boat at age 10. After graduation from high school he and a close friend bought a boat and went off to sea in the LuLu Belle.

Many miles were covered over numerous years, stopping in ports along the way for supplies and for work. Charlie owned three boatyards in his younger years building, selling and repairing many boats.

During this time he received a call from Katherine Hepburn asking him to come to Squam Lake in New Hampshire to look at her boat, which had received extensive damage during a storm. He traveled to New Hampshire to review the damage and advised her that he could repair it. Charlie became good friends with her and she invited him to go sailing with her often.

Charlie then joined the United States Coast Guard from 1941 to 1946, having been stationed at the Isle of Shoals and Damariscove Island amongst others. Charlie then moved to Maine and began working for Central Maine Power in the Boothbay office as an appliance repairman until the office was closed. He then went on to Mason Station in Wiscasset and then to Maine Yankee until a severe foot injury caused him to retire.

Charlie had a great love of the outdoors, mountain climbing, camping and hiking. He and his daughter, Judy, climbed several mountains in New Hampshire, including Mt. Washington twice. He also loved camping with his wife, Mary.

Anyone who knew Charlie will remember him as a great storyteller. He could hold an audience’s attention for hours on end. Charlie was a great "fixer-upper," able to do about anything, plumbing, electrical, building and almost any type of repair work. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Masonic Lodge #79 in Rockland.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Day Hull; daughter, Judith Marshall and her husband, Tom, of Southport; stepdaughter, Ruth Day Jackimovicz and her husband, Joe, of Boothbay; granddaughter, Kim Thiboutot and her fiance, Cory Peaslee, of Edgecomb; great-grandsons, Jason Dighton of Alna and Christopher Dighton of Edgecomb; stepgrandsons, Clint Lewis of Virginia and Justin Lewis of Boothbay.

Per Charlie's wishes, there will be no funeral service. There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charlie’s name to: The Salvation Army, 297 Cumberland Avenue, P.O. Box 3575, Portland, ME 04104; or to a charity of your choice.
