Sculptor Andreas von Huene to be at Zorach annual meeting
The Friends of the Zorach Fountain, dedicated to preserving and interpreting Spirit of the Sea, the sculptural fountain located in Bath’s City Park, invites the public to its annual meeting and program. The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, April 10 at the Patten Free Library located at 33 Summer Street in Bath.
In a departure from its customary art historical lecture, the nonprofit organization will feature gifted local sculptor Andreas von Huene. He will demonstrate the modeling process employed by many sculptors –including noted artist William Zorach.
Educated also in engineering and design, von Huene creates sculpture in granite, stone, wood, and metal, most often inspired by the natural world. More than twenty of von Huene’s public art installations can be found throughout the State of Maine, in parks, at schools and, locally, at Mid Coast Hospital and Patten Free Library.
For the Friends event, von Huene will model a figure in clay (much as Zorach would have done) and share examples of the process by which such a model is cast in bronze. He will reveal how haptic and kinesthetic senses, proportion, and spatial awareness are all natural parts of the sculptor's creative process. Audience members will be encouraged to participate. The program will provide a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of an an artist at work.
William Zorach, renowned for his expressive sculptures, paintings and prints, divided his time between New York and Maine; his family made a permanent home in Georgetown for many years.
In 1962, the artist presented his original work Spirit of the Sea to the City of Bath.
