Heirloom tomatoes at Morris Farm
Spring is finally here and it’s time to dream about tomatoes fresh from your garden. On Saturday, May 30, you can start to make those dreams come true with a visit to the Morris Farm at 156 Gardiner Road (Route 27) in Wiscasset. The Morris Farm Community Plant Sale will offer 17 varieties of heirloom tomato plants, grown from seed and carefully tended by Wiscasset High School students.
The doors of the barn will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for the annual sale. Think about slicing tomatoes, paste tomatoes for your sauces, and sweet cherry tomatoes for your kitchen garden. Imagine the colors: red, yellow, orange, purple, green, and a deep red that is called black. You’ll find Grandma Mary’s Paste, Peacevine Cherry, Cosmonaut Volkov, Rose deBerne, Black Cherry, Cherokee Purple, and Black Prince, among many other varieties that are not available in local greenhouses.
Morris Farm volunteers will be on hand to help you with your plant selections, which may also include a wide variety of hardy Maine-grown perennials and herbs.
The Morris Farm is a nonprofit educational farm. It is open to the public seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. It is home to the Margaret Ellis Community Gardens, the Wiscasset Primary School Garden, and a University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Garden.
