Wiscasset voters OK adult ed funding
A special town meeting June 16 tied up a loose end on Wiscasset’s school budget. Voters Tuesday night agreed to spend $10,000 on adult education.
The money was part of the $8.4 million in spending that residents approved at the polls June 9; however, a prior town meeting where the budget was passed piece by piece was missing the adult education question.
So one more meeting, for its approval, was needed, Interim Superintendent of Schools Lyford Beverage has said.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Beverage apologized for the meeting being needed. “It was just simply missed,” he said.
Seventeen voters turned out for the meeting, Town Clerk Christine Wolfe said. The adult education item passed in a show of hands about seven minutes into the meeting.
Wiscasset will pay Regional School Unit 1 the money to continue providing the town’s adult education, a change launched in 2014 after Wiscasset left Regional School Unit 12. The program is now called the Regional School Unit 1-Wiscasset adult education program, its director Pam Moody said.
