Marine resources topic for dam committee tonight
The next meeting of the Head Tide Site Committee will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 8 at the Alna fire station. The theme will be the sea-run fisheries of the Sheepscot River.
Claire Enterline from the Maine Department of Marine Resources will be making a presentation on what species are present in the river, what their status is, and how they could be improved. For several years, Claire has made presentations to the public during the spring alewife run at the Head Tide Dam site.
The Sheepscot River is home to 12 sea-run fish found in Maine, although for many of these species, their numbers are all at less than 10% of their historical abundance due to problems in the river and/or in the marine environment. The State of Maine has made great strides in restoring many of these species and today Maine is one of the only states on the east coast with commercial alewife and elver (juvenile eel) fisheries.
