Boothbay artist Cecile Clifford to exhibit at Miles
Miles Memorial Hospital Hall Gallery presents paintings in watercolor and acrylic by Cecile Clifford of Boothbay Nov. 28 through Jan. 1, 2016.
Cecile's art reflects her love of the “Good Old Days” with a strong sense of place, having been born and spending her childhood on Southport with her grandparent, many of her paintings are of coastal town scenes from an era when life was slower and gentler.
She also loves to paint farm scenes taken from her own experiences living on a farm on the River Road with her husband David and two children in the ’70s.
After moving to East Machias in 1977, Cecile completed her education with a B.A. in early education at U.M.M. She taught gifted and talented classes for 10 years before taking up painting full time, spending most of her time plein air painting in the beautiful woods and shores of Washington County.
Her interest in carousels came from her love of horses. She studied the history of carousel carvings and made trips in the New England area to see what was left of the original wooden carousels. Thus began a series of paintings of them. One of which is in the Heritage plantation museum in Sandwich, Mass., where a lovely armored lead horse caught her eye.
Although mainly self-taught Cecile has studied in workshops with Ed Foster, Leo Smith, Lewis Richards, Carl Schmaltz and Carleton Plummer.
Cecile has shown successfully in galleries in Machias, Eastport, Ellsworth, Bar Harbor and New Brunswick, Canada.
Since moving back to Boothbay she has shown in Boothbay Harbor, Brunswick, Freeport, Rhode Island, and she has been included in the Maine Arts Commission Juried Artist Registry.
She shows her work in her own “Gallery at My Way” in Boothbay in the summer.
