"Joy" is a comedy/drama written and directed by David O. Russell, director of “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle.”

Loosely based on American inventor, businesswoman, and entrepreneur Joy Mangano's rags to riches story. Joy (Jennifer Lawrence) creates her own business empire and becomes a self-made millionaire. “Spotlight” is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning investigation. In 2001, Boston Globe Editor Marty Baron assigns the investigative “Spotlight” team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys.

Led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll (Brian D'Arcy James) and Sacha Pfeiffern (Rachel McAdams) interview victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. The reporters make it their mission to provide proof of a cover-up of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church.

“Spotlight” has been winning top honors on the awards circuit, including mention on 33 "Best Movies" lists, it recently won "Best Picture" at the Critics' Choice Awards and has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including "Best Picture." With Liev Schreiber, John Slattery and Stanley Tucci.

“Brooklyn” Saoirse Ronan, nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her star turn, gives a remarkably lively and subtle performance as Eilis Lacey, a young woman who emigrates from Ireland to New York in the early 1950s, in John Crowley’s lovely adaptation of the novel by Colm Toibin.

The film was also nominated for Best Picture of the Year. Screenings Thursday, Jan. 21 at 2 and 7 p.m.

Downton in Damariscotta The 6th and final season of the highest-rated drama in PBS history, Downton Abbey, screens Friday afternoons at 2 p.m. for the run of the show beginning on Friday, Jan 8. Free to the public. Episode #3 airs Fri Jan 22 at 2 PM.

“The Winter's Tale” with Dame Judi Dench. Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's tragi-comedy set both in a Sicilian court and a glorious bohemian countryside.

The story follows the anguish of King Leontes of Sicilia (Kenneth Branagh), who accuses the King of Bohemia, Polixenes, of having an affair with his pregnant wife. Plotting to murder Polixenes, Leontes orders his wife be thrown in prison and for the baby to be banished.

Act Two, on a lighter note, is filled with mirth and merriment as the son of Polixenes (who managed to escape,) falls in love with a lowly shepherd girl. Also starring Dame Judi Dench as Paulina. Plays Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.

“Room” Both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, “Room,” with for 44 award wins and 94 nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Picture and for Best Actress, is a unique and touching exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child.

After 5-year-old Jack (Jacob Tremblay) and his Ma (Brie Larson – who won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama) escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world. As he experiences all the joy, excitement, and fear that this new adventure brings, he holds tight to the one thing that matters most of all - his special bond with his loving and devoted mother.

“The Taming of the Shrew” Presented by The Bolshoi Ballet, Shakespeare's comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers with music by Dmitri Shostakovich, this new production was staged exclusively for the Bolshoi. Playing Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.

“Les Liaisons Dangereuses” The National Theatre Live brings the Donmar Warehouse’s highly anticipated new production, directed by Josie Rourke. Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge.

Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed. Broadcast live from the Donmar Warehouse on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. and rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
