Firefighters keep Woolwich woods fire away from two homes
A woods fire near Chopps Cross and Middle roads Saturday afternoon came within about 10 feet of one home and about 20 feet of another, but a successful firefighting effort protected both, Woolwich Fire Captain Glen Kirkpatrick said.
The fire damaged but did not destroy a shed at one of the homes, a trailer, Kirkpatrick said. Fire crews from Dresden and Arrowsic joined Woolwich firefighters at the scene. Kirkpatrick praised both towns’ help. “Very good. We were glad to have them.”
No one was hurt. “(There were) just a lot of scared homeowners,” the captain said in a telephone interview Saturday night.
Crews were paged out starting at 3:10 p.m. April 16, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office personnel said. The fire was reported as knocked down at 3:27 p.m. and the scene was cleared at 4:06 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
Saturday was a red flag day, meaning conditions posed a heightened fire risk. No burn permits were being issued in Woolwich, nor would be until some significant rain comes, Kirkpatrick said.
The fire was the town’s only brush fire after a string of windy days under the dry conditions. “This was our first one and hopefully it will be our last one,” Kirkpatrick said.
He did not have an exact cause but said the fire was accidental. It was confined to about half an acre, he said.
