Heartwood whips up 'The Tempest'
Heartwood is pulling out the stops for its final and largest production of the season, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” running July 15 through 23 in the Poe Theater at Lincoln Academy.
In a word: fantastical.
This intriguing late work of Shakespeare provides a virtual playground of ideas for Heartwood’s creative company and cast. And the Poe Theater, a magical setting where audience and cast are but breaths apart, is just the place to ride the edge of imagination, touching the themes of aging, relationships, entrapment, loss, community, self-discovery, love and faith.
This epic text is boiled down like springtime sap, into a tight 90-minute piece, with a sonic landscape of live music, projection media, song, movement and very cool lighting. The goal: a deep and earnest search for the humanity of this piece and for its musicality, through image and sound.
The professional cast of 11 are hired actors from around the country, several returning to Heartwood from prior shows, a few new to this stage.
The veteran technical crew led by Director Griff Braley includes local artist and painter Mary Boothby, tech director Mark Bedell, professional makeup artist Katie Machaiek, singer/songwriter/musician Mehuman Johnson, bassist Max McFarland, lighting and projection technician Letitia Munson, and costumer Heidi Kopishke.
There are seven performances including one matinee. Times and ticket prices vary. For full details, visit www.heartwoodtheater.org, email info@heartwoodtheater.org or phone 207-563-1373.
Sellouts are common in this 150-seat space so reservations very strongly recommended.
