Wiscasset School Committee to hear playground update
A chain-link fence has gone up between the Wiscasset Elementary School playground and parking lot, putting the playground into compliance with state law, Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot said.
The fence, installed earlier this month, is one of a series of add-ons to the playground ahead of the building’s second year as an elementary school; still to come are additional equipment and a safety surface under it — this time mulch instead of last year’s costlier rubberized surface, Wilmot said in a phone interview Friday. She’ll update the School Committee on the progress July 28. Wilmot will also report on vacant jobs.
The committee meets at 6 p.m. in the Wiscasset Middle High School library.
Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Director Todd Souza and Public Works Director Doug Fowler are helping on the playground work and adding their perspectives to the project, Wilmot said. Depending on the weather and when the equipment arrives, installation may happen either the week of Aug. 15 or the week of Aug. 22, she said.
Also Thursday night, the committee is set to take up the resignations of WMHS technology education teacher Rob Cronk, WES grade one teacher Julie Mitchell, WMHS educational technician Kim Andersson, WMHS grades seven and eight science teacher Dawn Jones, and WMHS physical education teacher Marguerite Cullivan.
The meeting will be Jason Putnam’s first since voters elected him to the committee as a write-in candidate in June. “I’m looking forward to getting in there and figuring out how things work, and getting things done,” Putnam said in a phone interview Saturday.
One of Putnam’s first tasks as a member will be to help pick the next chairman and vice chairman. At then-chairman Steve Smith’s final meeting as a member in June, Smith asked Vice Chairman Eugene Stover to lead the start of this month’s meeting until the new officers are decided.
