When Stacy White toured Wiscasset Elementary School as a candidate for principal, one of the two well-spoken students showing her around told her people there just wanted someone who cares about the kids.

“I knew then, this was a great place to be.”

On Monday night, White got the job and a Wolverines sweatshirt. “I am just thrilled,” the Lisbon Community School teacher said in an interview in the Wiscasset Middle High School library where the School Committee voted 5-0 to hire her.

White will succeed Mona Schlein, who retires at the end of this school year. Schlein said the two will get together soon to talk.

White starts July 1. She has a two-year deal at $79,025 a year, Superintendent of Schools Heather Wilmot said. White has a bachelor’s in elementary education from the University of Maine at Farmington and, from the University of New England, a master’s in education and a certificate of advanced graduate studies. In Lisbon, she has taught grades one, two, three, five and six and been a curriculum team leader and president of the teachers association.

She and husband Michael White, with her for Monday night’s announcement, have a son, 17, who golfs, and daughter, 13, who dances competitively. The family lives in Lisbon and will continue to after Stacy White becomes principal at WES.

Asked why she applied, White said she was drawn to Wiscasset’s job listing that referred to the position as part of a leadership team in a department that values professional growth. She’s a lifelong learner, she said. And throughout the interviews and selection process, it was clear the department shared her outlook to put the children first, including their emotional and social needs as well as their academic ones, White said.

Wilmot commented via email later, she was excited to have White on the team. “I am confident that she will serve the students, families and community in a way that is positive, purposeful and will underscore why she is the right fit for the job! Mrs. White is an exceptional leader and I know she will do right by kids and the community.”

A meet-and-greet will be set, so families and staff can talk with White and a smooth transition can start, Wilmot added.
