Craft workshops offered at Boothbay Railway Village
Have you always wanted to carve stone, or work with wood or metal? This summer Boothbay Railway Village is offering stone-carving, barrel-making, and blacksmithing workshops as part of the Artisan Days Program of craft demonstrations.
Create a relief sculpture that can be used as a bedwarmer with sculptor and art teacher Anne Alexander. Participants will learn to carve soapstone using rasps, files, and chisels. The pieces will be finished using wet sanding paper in various grits to achieve a soft sheen to the stone. Carving Soapstone Bedwarmer Relief Sculpture, Monday, July 17, 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. BRV Members $55 per person or family rate of $95 for two, non-members $60 per person or family rate of $100 for two. Ages 12 to adult. Age 8 and above are welcome with parent participation.
Make a nail keg barrel using traditional tools with coopersmith Ed Lutjens of the Portland Barrel Company. Students will learn basic coopering skills and process as well as the fascinating history of barrel making. Participants will dress staves using a stave jointer and cooper's ax, hand rivet hoops for their cask, steam staves over a small fire to bend them into final form, and cut the grove in the end of the cask. Let's Make a Nail Keg!, Tuesday, August 29, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. BRV Members $110, non-members $120.
Practice basic hammer motions, drawing out, bending, and scrolling in the forge with blacksmith Jim Kearney. Students will have made a small hook or other object by the end of the session.
