Kenyon College professor to introduce ‘A Quiet Passion’
New York Times critic Manohla Dargis has “A Quiet Passion” on her list of Top 10 films for 2017. Cynthia Nixon delivers a triumphant performance as Emily Dickinson as she personifies the wit, intellectual independence and pathos of the poet whose genius only came to be recognized after her death. Acclaimed British director Terence Davies exquisitely evokes Dickinson's deep attachment to her close-knit family along with the manners, mores and spiritual convictions of her time that she struggled with and transcended in her poetry.
“A Quiet Passion,” rated PG-13, shows Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. following an introduction and Q & A with Professor John Ward, retired chair of the English Department at Kenyon College (Ohio). Ward, who graduated from Amherst College and earned his PhD from University of Virginia, is an expert on British literature of the 18th and 19th centuries. During his college days, his dorm room at Amherst overlooked Emily Dickinson’s house.
Ward will speak on Dickinson vs. Jane Austen, Emily Bronte and George Eliot, all of whom struggled to gain the attention they deserved and who began publishing with men's pseudonyms. FREE dessert and coffee will be served starting at 6:30 p.m.
The film plays again on Friday, Jan. 12, 2 p.m. (film only).
“As Emily Dickinson, Cynthia Nixon is forthright, sometimes abrasive, often funny and never less than thrilling company.” A. O. Scott, The New York Times
