27-year-old Waldoboro man found dead
A 27-year-old Waldoboro man was found dead in the snow several hundred yards off Winslows Mills Road February 9.
Waldoboro police were called about a disturbance at 951 Winslows Mills Road around 6:15 p.m. February 8, according to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde in a press release. After they arrived, they were told Frank Leathers had left the residence on foot and was headed south on Winslows Mills Road to a friend's house on Route 1.
Officers checked the area and found footprints in the snow across the street from the residence leading into the woods.
While searching for Leathers, Waldoboro Sgt. Jamie Wilson followed the tracks into the woods a short distance, but due to deep snow and extreme weather conditions, he had to soon turn back, said Labombarde.
A more exhaustive search was conducted until 12:30 a.m. February 9 and the search involved more police officers and Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer. Labombarde said the search was unsuccessful.
At 8 a.m., another search was initiated by state Game Warden Joe Lefebvre and members of the Waldoboro Police Department. Labombarde said Leathers was located at around 11:15 a.m., deceased, in the woods.
"Although this death is not considered as suspicious, an autopsy has been scheduled for February 11 at the Medical Examiners Office in Augusta," said Labombarde in the release.
