Alna artist Jon Luoma watercolors and ink drawings
Jon Luoma of Alna will exhibit landscape watercolors and ink drawings from Maine, Newfoundland, and the Galapagos Islands, from March 18 through May 3 at the Miles Memorial Hospital Hall Gallery, off the Bristol Road just south of downtown Damariscotta.
Luoma’s paintings depict scenes from Midcoast preserves and local back country, northern Maine wild lands, Baxter State Park, Acadia National Park, and travels outside the U.S. They sometimes include birds and wildlife associated with these landscapes, and use traditional Western watercolor techniques but also reflect influences from Chinese ink painting and its philosophy. Luoma studied traditional ink painting in China in 2006.
He has exhibited in many area group and solo shows, and his illustrations for a letterpress edition of Thoreau’s “The Maine Woods” are in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art. During the May to October season, Luoma’s paintings can be seen at the Stable Gallery, 26 Water Street in Damariscotta.
