André Benoit: Featured artist in March and April at SML
Through the months of March and April, artist André Benoit’s assemblage/mixed media art will be on exhibit (and for sale) at the Southport Memorial Library.
Once an artist using paints as his media, Benoit has been scouring beaches, wood piles, and other locations to find materials to create with. “Wood remnants, flotsam and jetsam from the shoreline, trim-work from renovated homes, and broken and discarded furniture - what I most enjoy about my work with salvaged materials are the stories behind my acquisition of them, and the opportunity to meld unrelated pieces into a composition that commands a second look,” writes the artist on his website, www.andrebenoit-art.com.
Besides the pieces shown in the photos with this article, some titles of André Benoit’s work titles include: “The Artic Kiss,” “Ankle Deep,” “Here’s Looking at You” and “The Breaching of Nessie.”
Last June Benoit demonstrated his art form in a class held at the Maine Art Gallery of Wiscasset, one of the local venues where he has exhibited his work. Others include Boothbay Region Art Foundation, and Gold/Smith Gallery.
See the show, and take out a book or two during the Library’s open hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday evenings, 6-8.
