BRHS alumna Angel Ames equips Class of 2020 with masks
Thanks to Boothbay Region High School alumna and Seahawk track legend Angel Ames, BRHS seniors will march June 5 with masks to match their caps and gowns. Principal Tricia Campbell announced May 18 students will be marching together and the ceremony will be livestreamed via Boothbay Region TV and covered by the Boothbay Register.
Ames said she is not big on getting a lot of attention. She quickly credited Dean of Students Allan Crocker with the idea for the blue and gold reversible masks. “Allan asked for 50. I am donating the fabric and elastic and he is giving a donation to the Community Center’s Sewing Room.”
Donations go to maintenance of the machines and to batting for the comfort quilts Community Center and Rotary Club of Boothbay Harbor members throw in for every year, said Ames. Crocker said it is yet one more cause Ames stands quietly behind when called upon.
“I am surprised Angel discussed it with you at all,” said Crocker. “She is never one that wants to get recognition for all the great things she does. I know of at least a dozen times she has done some sort of selfless act and absolutely refuses to accept any credit or recognition.”
Crocker said Ames’ kindness and selflessness was the inspiration for the project.
“… One day at Hannaford … before masks were mandatory, (Angel) noticed I did not have one and the very next day she was at my house with four for my family. She did such a great job I immediately thought of her when we realized we needed masks for our senior class.”
Said Ames, “I think it's a good idea to wear masks. I've been making them from the beginning with Jen, a friend of mine … It's just important for everybody to wear them. That's it.”
