Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District school committee members learned May 13, the Boothbay Region High School 2020 valedictorian and salutatorian are Hali Goodwin and Will Perkins, respectively. Principal Tricia Campbell said plans for graduation are still up in the air as seniors are still responding to a survey with a series of options from a virtual march to postponing a ceremony.

“We want our seniors to decide what they want to do,” said Campbell.

Special Services Director Lisa Smith and Boothbay Region Elementary School Principal Shawna Kurr said there seems to be a domino effect of teachers and staff who may move on as the schools and the district make special preparations for the fall semester should social distancing continue. Smith and Kurr gave no numbers.

“We have some folks leaving unexpectedly,” said Smith. “My hope is to have everything filled before Chris (Baribeau) walks through the door.”

Kurr said there are some upcoming retirements, but she expects more jobs to open up at BRES if plans for distance learning continue into the fall. “It’s shifting the mindset of those folks who are close to retirement. It is pushing some people over the edge to retire.”

Superintendent Keith Laser and Food Service Director Darlene French announced food service will continue for BRHS and BRES through June 12. Students will receive three days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches June 10. The summer meal program through Healthy Lincoln County begins June 15.

The committee opted out of the Child Adult Food Care Program per Laser and French’s recommendations as participation would constrict student schedules and burden cafeteria labor. The CSD approved the meal service agreements with Edgecomb Eddy and Southport Central schools.

Dan Hallinan is the new BRHS boys varsity basketball coach, replacing long-time coach I.J. Pinkham. Brittany Rothwell was moved from seventh and eighth grade resource room to kindergarten through eighth grade composite room; Paulette Carter, educational technician III at BRHS, to composite room teacher; Gray Ferris, educational technician III at BRES to resource room teacher; and Soren Barker, seventh and eighth grade social studies to fifth and sixth grade. Katherine Erwin was hired as BRHS educational technician III; Becky Alley, BRES special education educational technician III; Sandy Timberlake, kindergarten through sixth grade social worker; Christina Lorrain, BRHS secretary; Suzanne Sherman, BRHS secretary; Kathy Page will be retiring from food service; and resignations include school psychologist Melinda Renda and social worker Katy Sparda Cloutier.

The committee will meet for a workshop at 6 p.m. May 20 via Zoom to speak with Lavallee Brensinger Architects about the CSD master plan.
