'Carmen' comes to The Harbor Theatre
Presented by Corps de Ballet, Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Massimo di Palermo Teatro Antico di Taormina, this gorgeous visual was filmed live on July 15, 2015 during the annual Festival Euro Mediterraneo at the Ancient Greek Theater of Taormina, built early in the 7th century B.C., on the Sicilian coast.
This is the tragic story of love-struck soldier, Don José, and toreador Escamillo who vie for the love of the dazzling and seductive gypsy, Carmen, set to the gorgeous music of Bizet.
Music by Georges Bizet, libretto for the opera in four acts by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novel with the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The conductor is Myron Michailidis, stage direction and sets by Enrico Castiglione, and costumes by Sonia Cammarata
When Carmen meets and flirts with José, she is already involved with Escamillo, but Carmen gives her gypsy heart to whomever she pleases, when she pleases. And José most certainly notices her, falling quickly under her spell.
But José's mother has chosen a different woman for her son, Micaëla, a maiden from his native village of Navarra. Micaëla arrives on the scene with a letter from ma-ma in which she gives her blessing for their marriage. The letter prompts him to actually think about marrying Micaëla.
José's thoughts are interrupted by Carmen starting a fight with another woman. Carmen is carted off to jail by José who was ordered to do so by Lieutenant Zuniga. While she is in jail, after evading José's questions she decides to read her Tarot cards and sees her own death in them.
Meanwhile, José discovers the matador Escamillo searching for his love ... Carmen. A knife fight ensues, interrupted by the recently sprung Carmen. Escamillo invites everyone to his next bullfight in Seville. Later, Micaëla convinces José to follow her and return to his now dying mother.
The final act brings the audience to the entrance to the bullring of Seville. Escamillo's toreador's entourage arrives and Escamillo has Carmen on his arm. Both are in peril of death by a vengeful José.
