DaPonte announces programs for 24th year
The DaPonte String Quartet will move to new venues in Brunswick and Portland while returning to familiar ones in Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor, and Thomaston as they start its 24th season with three different programs.
Series I, “Enemies of the State,” runs Nov. 5-15 and includes quartets by three composers who suffered, even died, at the hands of the state: Mozart, “Quartet in A Major;” Erwin Schulhoff, “String Quartet No. 1” and Shostakovich's “Quartet in C Minor, Op. 110.”
Series II, “Easter,” runs Mar. 24 to April 3 and features a vocalist to add a special flare to the holiday-themed program: Josquin des Prez’s “Motets,” J.S. Bach’s “Selected Arias from the Cantatas,” and Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross,” Quartet Op. 51.
Series III, with its light-hearted title “Dino’s Hit List,” runs May 13-22 and features quartets that the DSQ’s long-time violinist Ferdinand (Dino) Liva most loves playing: Mozart’s “Quartet in B Flat Major,” Respighi’s “String Quartet in D Major,” and Beethoven’s “String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2.”
This season the Quartet moves its Portland concert to the Jewish Museum on Congress Street in the East End, which is handicap-accessible and has ample free parking nearby. The Brunswick-area concert has moved to the new Unitarian Universalist Church on the corner of Middle and Pleasant streets in Brunswick, which also has abundant free parking. Other venues include Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta, St. John’s Church in Thomaston and St. Columba’s in Boothbay Harbor.
Tickets are $20, or $50 for all three series. For tickets, locations, and performance times, visit www.daponte.org or call 207-529-4555.
