Davis Sisters String Quartet returns to Schooner Cove June 23
For Josie and Sophie Davis, a June 23rd concert at Schooner Cove in Damariscotta is a homecoming of sorts.
Raised in Waldoboro and trained at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Josie Davis, 26, and Sophie Davis, 24, have played several times at Schooner Cove over the years, even before they went off to college.
The June concert, which will take place at 2 p.m. in the Schooner Cove library, will feature a string quartet consisting of the Davis sisters with close friends and fellow Oberlin graduates Jamie Feldman and Colin Wheatley.
The musical selections include Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76, No. 2 (Fifths), Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op. 13, No.2, and Heiter Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5.
Josie, now based in Providence, Rhode Island, said the Schooner Cove concerts and the other concerts the group has scheduled this summer on the midcoast (including in North Haven, Cushing and Waldoboro) are special both because they are a return to Maine, an important place for each member of the group, and because they are playing for familiar audiences.
“I love Maine, it feels like home to me and I love playing for Maine audiences. I know a lot of faces still and there is something really wonderful about playing for people you know,” said Josie.
The concert is sponsored by the Schooner Cove Classical Music Lover’s Committee, which brings high quality live performances to Schooner, often offering young Maine musicians an appreciative audience as they begin their careers and continuing that relationship as the artists become better known.
Over the years, Josie said she and Sophie have played many different kinds of music at Schooner Cove, including folk, classical and Latin music. The audience has always been warm, curious and receptive, she said.
Even for sisters, the two have a special connection that comes across when they play. They have performed together since they began their violin studies at ages 4 and 6.
The quartet, made up of the sisters, Feldman and Wheatley, brings a special chemistry of its own.
“I think one of the things that we value as a quartet is showing our energy and our love for music in a visual way. We try to make our performances compelling and we aim to speak about the music in an accessible way,” said Josie.
The concert is free and open to the public, but because space is limited, please call Karen Westhaver at 563-4001 to RSVP.
