Deborah Kozak solo show at River Arts
“Solace,” a show of limited edition, original linocut and woodcut prints by Deborah Kozak, will run from Thursday, Sept. 16, through Wednesday, Oct. 6 in the River Room at River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta. There will be a reception on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Deborah Kozak is English by birth. She spent 30 years living in northern New Jersey before moving to Florida three years ago. Her Maine connection is longstanding; she and her husband have owned a summer home on the Pemaquid peninsula for over 25 years. Following retirement from a long career in communications and marketing, Kozak now enjoys the luxury of spending half the year in Maine, devoting more time to her printmaking, an art form she discovered later in life, after many years of painting for enjoyment.
Kozak is inspired and sustained by the beauty and colors of the world around her. Based on photographs that she takes, her handmade woodcut and linocut relief prints are created using the reduction method, successively carving and adding colors to a single block that, once completed, can never be used again.
“Over the past 18 months, I was able to find solace in both the scenery around me and the process of printmaking itself,” said Kozak. “Printmaking challenges me to distill my reactions to what I see. There’s a wonderful tension between the contemplative action of carving a block and the excitement of seeing an image come to life on paper.”
