Driver swerves to avoid moose, spills potatoes on Route 295
State troopers and Sagadahoc Sheriff’s deputies responded to a tractor trailer crash on Route 295 at mile marker 43 in Richmond at 10:17 p.m. May 27.
An AJA GO Transportation truck loaded with potatoes had been traveling south when it went off the median side, traveling several hundred feet before striking a cross-over embankment and finally coming to rest on the other side.
Marc Benoit, 63, of Hampden, Mass., told troopers he swerved the tractor trailer to avoid a moose in the southbound lane.
The truck, fully loaded with potatoes, was coming from northern Maine bound for Connecticut. The impact broke the box portion of the truck in half, spilling the load.
Benoit suffered minor injuries to his legs and was transported to Mid Coast Hospital.
