Edgecomb man dies in Route 1 accident
An Edgecomb man died when the dump truck he was driving veered off Route 1 in Newcastle and struck a utility pole anchor wire on June 21.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office reported that Malcolm Giles, 72, was operating an unloaded 2004 Peterbilt dump truck and traveling south between Sheepscot Road and Reny's warehouse when the accident occurred around 12:10 p.m. The truck was also towing an empty trailer. The truck and trailer went down an embankment and came to rest against a group of trees.
Rescue personnel arrived on scene and determined Giles was deceased.
An unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled as a result of the crash and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was called to the scene.
As a matter of protocol, a blood-alcohol sample will be taken by the Medical Examiner's Office for analysis. However, police said there is no indication of alcohol involvement. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. The primary investigating officer is Deputy Brian Collamore. A reconstruction of the crash is being conducted by Crash Reconstruction Specialist Sgt. Jason Nein.
Traffic was minimally disrupted and investigators remained on scene for nearly five hours.
Members of the Newcastle Fire Department and Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service responded to the scene. State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Investigators also responded due to the involvement of a commercial vehicle.
