Wiscasset School Department's finance director Shelley Schmal will announce her retirement at the Aug. 14 school committee meeting. Schmal said she is retiring after 33 years in education, and she plans to do something “not school-related,” part-time, after her retirement in December. She said she had been considering retiring since last December.

“I’ve worked for the school department my whole adult life,” first in Dresden for six years, and then 24 years at Wiscasset High School. She has been finance director three years. 

At Wiscasset High, she was yearbook adviser for many years. “I loved the kids,” she said. “I miss them.”

Schmal said she has enjoyed her career, but the time has come to do something different. 

A search for a new finance director will begin when school starts, according to Administrative Assistant Stacey Souza.
