Fieldstone Castle, the Port Clyde studio of Maine artist Greg Mort, will be the venue for his “Island Worlds” exhibition Aug. 6 and 7. An artist tour and talk will take place Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. and will include his recent trip to Finland and the similarities of the Maine and Finnish landscapes.

Mort spends each summer in Port Clyde where he frequently paints on the many fascinating and mysterious nearby islands. The series, “Island Worlds,” are on a larger than life format - 8' x 8' canvases - to capture the wonder and mystery of these off shore oases.

As a special feature, Mort is highlighting information about the fine work of The Island Institute throughout the exhibition.

Greg Mort is a widely recognized American contemporary artist whose unmistakably modern creations have the classic feel of the Dutch Masters juxtaposed with startlingly modern designs. His signature images combine his twin passions for science and nature.

Mort’s art is in many prominent collections including the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, Boston Museum of Science, Delaware Art Museum, Farnsworth Museum, Academy Art Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Brandywine River Museum and the White House.

His artwork has been exhibited in over 100 museum and gallery shows around the world. Current exhibitions include “Starry Skies of Art” at the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Finland, "Paintings of Maine" at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C. and Two Roads at Somerville Manning Gallery in Greenville, Delaware on the Brandywine River.

In the fall Mort will be the featured artist and speaker at the Peabody Essex Museum’s “Lunar Attractions” exhibition in Salem, Massachusetts. He has been a commissioned NASA artist since 1983 and in 2010, his painting “ZERO-G Apples,” was selected for the “First Art Show in Space” aboard the International Space Station.

Throughout his career Mort has used his art and his audience to promote environmental awareness. In 2007 he established The Art of Stewardship Project, his family foundation that supports and encourages ecological consciousness through the arts. The Art of Stewardship works with arts and educational organizations to build partnerships and collaborations supporting the artist’s role in preserving our fragile Earth.

In February 2017 Mort will present Art of Stewardship mission as the Keynote speaker for the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Educators Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
