John Wissemann: ‘Leslie’s Garden, New Works on Paper’
John Wissemann can find his inspiration almost anywhere. In the working waterfront of small towns of the Maine Coast, in the traditional Japanese color woodblock prints, Bath Iron Works or Times Square, Wissemann has a fertile imagination and a way with color and form.
The seeds of this series of work started with drawings John made of the plants and flowers over several summers in his neighbor Leslie Land’s garden. From his designs he then made cutouts and stencils that he used to make monoprints by placing them on plexiglass printing plates. That’s just the beginning. He then over prints them and works into them colored pencil. The results are rich and layered atmospheric botanical fantasies.
These are the latest works on paper by this veteran of the Maine and New York art scene, on exhibit Aug. 18 - Sept. 21. John Wissemann recently turned 96 but his work is as young as his spirit. He is an inspiration to us all!
