Join the Sunrise Lighthouse Cruise Sept. 14
The now annual Sunrise Photography Cruise is coming up this Saturday, Sept. 14, aboard the Balmy Days out of Pier 8 in Boothbay Harbor. You can make your best shot of the area lighthouses aboard this cruise as most Maine lighthouses face East and with the sun rising in the East the low angle light bathing the lighthouses makes for wonderful opportunities for making memorable photographs. Captain Bill Campbell maneuvers the boat to get the very best look angles of the lighthouses that we see aboard the cruise.
But one view that will be missing this year is of the double lighthouse image with Ram Island in the foreground and the Cuckolds light in the distance framed nicely under and between the stanchions of the catwalk. The January storm washed away the walkway connecting the lighthouse to the island. That walkway always made for such a nice framing for the combo of the two lighthouses that was a favorite among the many photo opportunities aboard the cruise.
Thankfully the damage caused in that same coastal storm at Pemaquid has since been restored, just within the past month, which will again make for a nice photo opportunity of that lighthouse this year. Last year we first included Pemaquid as a part of the cruise and seeing that from the water at daybreak was just magical and a sight not easily seen but for on this cruise.
Mike Leonard will be aboard helping people to make their best shots as not only a part of the cruise but also for a Photography retreat hosted by Down East Magazine. You may see him leading groups of photographers around the area on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets for the Sunrise cruise are still available by contacting the Balmy Days ticket office.
