Leo W. Barter Sr.
Leo W. Barter Sr., 88, died Sept. 12, 2015, at his home in Boothbay.
He was born June 9, 1927, in Boothbay Harbor. Leo grew up in Boothbay and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School. He began working in local shipyards. He ran his own septic business for a while. Leo worked for Bath Iron Works for over 30 years working as a sandblaster, pipe fitter and in the paint department until he retired.
Leo enjoyed camping, hunting and watching Western movies. He loved to tell a good joke. He attended the Boothbay Baptist Church. He was a volunteer with the Woodchucks, a local group that helps provide fire wood to help the heating needs of the region. He had recently donated his chainsaw to the group.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Jessica Lynn Barter, and by his wife, Carolyn “Patsy” Barter.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Cusumano of Edgecomb, Beverly Elwell of Wiscasset, Susan Scott of Woodstock Valley, Connecticut, and Gail Alexander of Bath; son, Leo W. Barter Jr. of Boothbay; brother and writer, Roger “Bobby” Barter of Virginia; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. followed a service at 2 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Boothbay Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Steven Nash will officiate. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
