Leonard Meiselman: ‘Portrait of Trees’ opens Sept. 15
Wiscasset-based artist Leonard Meiselman has a new show opening at the Green Lion Gallery in Bath. “Portraits of Trees” opens on Friday, Sept. 15.
The show includes 23 of the artist’s smaller works on paper in pencil, ink and pastel –most of which were completed on the island. Those who remember his 2015 show, “A Protest Artist on Monhegan,” will recognize a couple of Meiselman’s works from that show. But only a couple.
There are also seven oil on canvas paintings, the largest of which is “Revelation,” a 50” x 70”. This painting, framed, is just shy of seven feet tall! Said a delighted Meiselman of “Revelation,” “It has had a universal ‘WOW’ and ‘Oh my God’ response!”
From the moment he first experienced Monhegan Island in 1956, while a student at the Skowhegan School of Art, the island, its trees, water … it’s very essence, became a major influence in his art; but moreover, the island moved him to his artistic soul. His connection to nature deepened with every visit thereafter – but, oh! those trees ...
“I grew up on the city streets of New York. In my late teens I got to see the trees on the coast of Maine,” writes Meiselman in his artist statement. “I was thrilled to the core of my being. My dream became to live on the coast of Maine and paint the trees.”
And so he has … and like no other. See for yourself. The show runs through Oct. 17.
Meiselman also exhibits at the Green Lion Gallery in Boothbay Harbor, 16 Granary Way, in the Chowder House building.
