Local silver screens and stages in January
Yes, the holidays will soon be over — holiday leftovers and sweets eaten, wrapping paper and boxes recycled, Yule/Christmas trees taken down and the outdoor light shows dimmed — but, never fear, good times and cheer will follow us into the new year!
On Wednesday, Jan. 6, The Harbor Theatre will present Bizet’s “Carmen” in between screenings of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta will be screening episodes of “Downton Abbey” — sadly this sixth season is the final season for this much beloved PBS mini-series — on Friday afternoons at 2 p.m. for the run of the show starting Fri. Jan. 8, free to the public.
Lincoln Theater will also present Kenneth Branagh as “Leontes” and Judi Dench as “Paulina” in Shakespeare’s “A Winter’s Tale” on Jan. 3 and 23 at I p.m. These two extraordinary actors are perfection in Shakespearean productions. For example, Branagh in the leading role of his opulent 1996 production of “Hamlet” or as “Benedick” in “Much Ado About Nothing,” among others; Dench in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “MacBeth,” and “Hamlet,” among others.
The Annual Boneheads and Holy Mackerels show at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 will fill you with good vibrations. As Cathy Sherrill describes it, “This night is about great music with some of our favorite musicians in a setting that invites listening, dancing, a corner to talk to a neighbor in, and a chance to check in with each other, midwinter.” And, this show goes on snow or no snow. Sherrill advises everyone come out - with their shovels!
