Maine Maritime Museum introduces family program series
On Feb. 20, Maine Maritime Museum will kick-off a new in-person program series designed for parents and kids: STEAMbox Family Workshops. The winter/spring programs integrate STEM and creative arts skills into cohesive and hands-on learning experiences.
The three Saturday morning workshops, which run Feb. 20, March 27 and April 17, will each center on a unique theme -- estuary habitats, sailors’ sea chests, and creative writing, all with a maritime twist.
“Maritime topics will serve as a launch pad to inspire creative problem solving and family collaboration. These cross-disciplinary workshops provide a space for future innovators to play, think, and create. The STEAMbox series will give families the opportunity to learn about estuary ecology and design their own species, explore life at sea and build their own sea chest, and learn how ship logs can inspire their own maritime legend,” said Sarah Timm, manager of interpretation.
STEAMbox Family Workshops will be held at the museum and led by museum educators. Space is limited to 16 participants per workshop.
“We recognize the need in our community for activities for families – especially kids – and fortunately our campus offers the space to accommodate on-site programs while following all state guidelines and recommendations. We’re excited to welcome families to experience the museum in new ways through these fun, creative workshops,” said Katie Spiridakis, marketing and communications manager.
