Maine’s Travis Mills, recalibrated veteran, publishes second book
Join U.S. Army SSG (Ret.) Travis Mills, founder and president of the Travis Mills Foundation, for a signing of his new book, “Bounce Back: 12 Warrior Principles to Reclaim & Recalibrate Your Life,” at 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 21, at Barnes and Noble, 9 Marketplace Drive, Augusta.
“Bounce Back” is Mills’s second book. “Tough As They Come” was published in 2016 and not only tells the story of when Mills lost his limbs in an IED explosion during his third tour of Afghanistan, but how the power of family and a positive attitude carried him through his recovery journey to becoming a veteran advocate, motivational speaker, businessman and philanthropist.
The new book includes a foreword by good friend and fellow soldier Jocko Willink, retired U.S. Navy Seal officer.
“This book is a master class in recovery, renewal and recalibration,” Willink writes. “Travis is not held back by challenges he faces – he is propelled forward by them. Let’s be more like Travis.”
In “Bounce Back,” Mills offers a glimpse into the incredible mindset he adopted when faced with the choice of moving forward in the face of inconceivable trauma. He outlines “12 Warrior Principles” and how these practices can be applied to various traumatic experiences – war, illness, death, divorce and more - telling stories of adversity in the lives of everyday people Mills knows personally.
“We all have those moments, the ones where we are set adrift by a life-changing event,” Mills writes in the book. “Yet we often lack the ability to parse these moments, understand how to respond and move beyond them.”
Warrior Principles defined in the book include:
That Dog Don’t Hunt – Stop Torturing Yourself and Stop Asking Why.
Stay Within the Guard Rails – Manage Your Emotions and Control Your Attitude.
Get a Battle Buddy – Never Underestimate the Power of a Support System.
Serve – Find Your Voice, Build on Your Strengths, and Live Meaningfully.
Travis’s message – that we cannot control what happens to us, and we can only focus on how we react and move forward – will inspire survivors from all walks of life.
Featured in the book is Farmington resident Ray Edgar’s story, Army veteran and Warrior PATHH Guide at the Travis Mills Foundation. The Foundation welcomed Warrior PATHH (Progressive & Alternative Training for Helping Heroes) in 2019, two years after establishing the Family Program for post-911 recalibrated veterans and their families.
Mills and the TMF Team saw the need to address the invisible wounds of war and Warrior PATHH proved to be the life-saving answer. Warrior PATHH is the nation’s first-ever program designed to cultivate and facilitate Post-Traumatic Growth in combat veterans and first responders, allowing these warriors to transform times of deep struggle into profound strength and growth.
Ray, a student in the Foundation’s first PATHH class, credits his transformation from being crippled by Post-Traumatic Stress, to leading a productive, meaningful life.
Stop by Barnes and Noble in Augusta at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, to meet Travis Mills where he’ll sign “Bounce Back,” also available on Amazon.
