Midcoast Conservancy hosts the exhibit 'Unspoken'
Artists George Mason and Leonard Meiselman are always looking for enormous walls; their work requires it, as many pieces are over six feet tall. They have found the space they need in the Midcoast Conservancy gallery space, where the two artists will present recent work together in a two-person show entitled “Unspoken” through Sept. 11. Midcoast Conservancy, located at 36 Water Street in Wiscasset, is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mason’s work is a study in textural contrasts; using a process of coating burlap with plaster, then cracking the hard surface to create different patterns, his stunning pieces invite the viewer to touch them to see how different each component feels. Said Mason, “There is a direct experience when viewing and touching color and texture, and it is nourishing beyond measure… Such an encounter may have no words or no need of them.” Mason’s palette comes straight from the natural world, in hues that bring fall leaves to mind.
The scale of Meiselman’s paintings pull the viewer close, to appreciate the nuance of his large oil-on-canvas works, then to step back in order to take in the whole of the evocative images. “When impulses from within urge themselves upon us and words abandon us or fail to express our feelings – images of our visual imagining – may soothe the mind into harmony,” Meiselman says.
In conjunction with Wiscasset Art Walk, a reception will take place on Thursday, August 25, from 5-8 p.m. Both artists will speak from 6 to 6:15 p.m. and again at 7 to 7:15 on the subject of their work and the “unspoken” in art.
