Mike and the Wolf or “Woofa Goofa with the green teeth”
My day became more than complete when Peter Wolf called to discuss his latest venture on disc called “A Cure for Loneliness” (released by Concord Records: April 8), appropriately named as a medium it cried out of the speaker kicking and grooving as the former J. Geils’ front man and legendary rocker is famous for. I was, however, left with many questions to ask and little time.
First, a little background. I grew up on his charismatic lyrics that screamed and shouted of blues and rock and roll, as well as soulful serenades to woo away ladies in attendance. The first time seeing his band was in 1973 at the Lewiston Armory. I think the ticket was $4.50. By 1976, Wolf would get into his revelry of rhyme for the song, “Must of Got Lost,” with “Hey Raputa the Buta! Flip me down your hair and let me climb up to the ladder of your love!” that would leave you wondering how he was so quick on the tongue.
I am still wondering what a “Goobalator” is. I am referencing his song, “How do you Know?”. Long and short, Peter Wolf is a legend and has played with many of the greats: Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Wilson Pickett, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and the Velvet Underground.
Since J. Geils, Wolf has produced eight albums, starting out with “Lights Out” that had great acclaim. His latest he described as an “eclectic mix of music” that hits all tastes.
“It’s Raining,” also a ballad, is noted to be written with Bobby Womack, and reiterates the American dream and its struggle.
“Peace of Mind” is soft and smooth and yet a ballad that makes you want to keep it in your CD player. It’s one of those songs that make you know Wolf is on the same train of thought as many of us. Sad, but hopeful in foraging through. Could be a ballad for our next election.
His last album, “Midnight Souveniers” (2010), is a great disc featuring Merle Haggard, Neko Case and Shelby Lynne.
Talking to him I could tell right away how he had become a DJ in his early years as an all night DJ at WBCN in Boston. Wolf is an encyclopedia of music, an artist with this history would have to be to survive in the business as long as he has.
Fame hasn’t changed him as he called me to get the word out that this show was going to be an exciting and intimate show to attend. There will be new material from his latest album and some good old J. Geils stuff as well some great covers, backed by his band, The Midnight Travelers.
Don’t miss this show, Wednesday, May 11 at 8 p.m. Port City is located at 504 Congress Street in Portland. Doors open at 7 p.m. Be there or be square!
I am confident he was probably understating that and I hope to follow up with a review of the show next week! So look for it!
