'Music for Winds,' 'Metamorphoses' and jazz this week
Bay Chamber Concerts Summer Concert Series enters its fourth week with "Music for Winds" on Thursday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House. The wonderful Danish composer Carl Nielsen's Wind Quintet anchors this program of music from composers hailing from across Europe, performed by some of this country's finest young wind performers.
The musicians for this piece include James Austin Smith, oboe; Julietta Curenton, flute; Alicia Lee, clarinet; Adrian Morejon, bassoon; David Byrd-Marrow, horn and Artistic Director Manuel Bagorro on piano.
Tickets for Music for Winds are $45 for adults and $10 for youth under age 25. The concert is offered in memory of renowned arts patron, Mary Curtis Bok who founded the Curtis Institute of Music and for many years oversaw the Curtis summer music colony in Rockport. As Rockport is celebrating its 125th anniversary this week, it is fitting to honor Mrs. Bok for this performance.
On Friday, Aug. 5 at 8:30 p..m. at Union Hall in Rockport, Bay Chamber Concerts presents an eclectic program that gives audience members a chance to get closer to these noteworthy musicians and experience some fascinating wind repertoire.
At the core of the program is Britten's Six Metamorphoses after Ovid, a work for solo oboe describing characters from Roman mythology, each with a narration. The piece is performed by the masterful James Austin Smith, extensively praised for his "virtuosic," "dazzling" and "brilliant" performances (The New York Times).
Tickets for Café Nights at Union Hall this week are $45 for adults and $10 for those under age 25. The Café Nights Series at Union Hall is generously sponsored by Mazie Cox and Brinkley Thorne, of Rockport.
Finally, on Sunday, August 7 at 5 p.m., as part of the culminating celebration of Rockport's 125th anniversary, Bay Chamber presents the Irene and Billy Wolf memorial concert, Jazz on the Water a free outdoor concert in Rockport Marine Park.
Part of day-long festivities, the Creative Ensemble Collective with guest saxophonist, Donnie McCaslin will perform jazz favorites and original works on the lawn just opposite the Harbor Master's office. Opening the afternoon's musical festivities at 4 p.m. is Rockport's very own Push Farther Project, featuring Alex Wilder and William Foote, guitars and Nora Willauer, cello, performing original songs.
