New car, officer for Damariscotta Police Department
The Damariscotta Police Department is getting a new face.
Ryan Chubbuck has been picked as the new officer for the department and was introduced to the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen during the Wednesday, Dec. 4 meeting.
Chubbuck, who has worked at Two Bridges Regional Jail for four years, will join the Damariscotta Police Department Dec. 12.
“I was impressed with him the first time he walked in with his application in hand,” Damariscotta Police Chief Ron Young said. “He's a good fit for the department and a great fit for the town.”
Town Manager Matt Lutkus said the department was looking for a new officer for three or months before Chubbuck signed aboard.
“Nobody hit the button until Ryan came along,” he said. “He brings us up to full staffing.”
In other police news, selectmen approved the purchase of a 2013 Ford Interceptor for the police department to replace a Dodge Charger with 160,000 miles on the odometer.
The new car will cost $27,483 after the old Dodge is traded in, and one of the unique features (apart from its all-wheel drive) will be its paint scheme, Young said.
“I'm a traditional police man,” he said. “(The new car) will be black and white. We're going to fly the colors; let them know we're out there.”
Young said the wording and design on the police car would have a very Damariscotta-like feel, though.
“When I was in Lincolnville, I went to the sixth grade class and recruited them to come up with the design,” he said. “They could come up with anything, although I stopped them at flames .... Then when it was done I put 'Designed by the class of 2018' so they could have ownership of it.
“I think it would be great to do something similar here.”
Although Young requested the turbocharged Ecoboost Interceptor, in the end he and the board of selectmen agreed on the more frugal standard V6 model, which cut off approximately $2,000 from the bottom line.
That $2,000 in savings will be put towards AEDs (automated external defibrillators) for the department.
