River Arts reopens with Volunteer Show
River Arts in Damariscotta re-opens on Saturday, Feb. 5 with a spectacular show of artwork created by some of the River Arts’ volunteers. This River Room show honors the dedication and hard work of five of the gallery’s volunteers. The show will run Feb. 5-23.
Judy Nixon works with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. Nixon’s artistic approach is anchored in her personal connection to the subject, with light and color playing an important part of the design. She loves to paint scenes from her home region in Maine, the Pemaquid peninsula and Monhegan Island.
Holly Anderson Baumm presents works in fiber and in paper collage. Her fiber collage integrates a variety of textiles with knitting, sewing, and embroidery. The complex paper collage combines painting and drawing. The two works are the same genre, the common denominator being abstraction with symbolism.
Gerd Koehler works as a painter and photographer. Koehler is drawn to the conceptual. He loves detail, granularity and the freedom to paint without constraints. He finds visual solutions for the real and the imagined. His challenge lies between the structured and unstructured.
Combining her love of drawing, color, and nature, Cheryl Young enjoys telling a story in her artwork. Raising domestic animals and interacting with wild creatures, Young became fascinated with the texture, patterns, and colors of animal fur, skin, and feathers which she translates in colored pencil, ink and watercolor pencil.
Alice de Mauriac introduces three new, color rich, abstract paintings. She describes her process, “Painting is a courageous journey into the unknown and a glimpse into the future. No one has been there, including me. An adventure of pushing materials, my aim is to surprise myself with something I haven’t seen before.”
In conjunction with this River Room show, River Arts at 36 Elm St. opens with the continuation of the Holiday Show, an opportunity to find works by your favorite artists at $200 or below.
